The Scottish Ferret Club supports both responsible breeding and rescue and re-homing of ferrets.

Ferrets usually come into season from March to late summer, although with mild winters and increased day lengths for ferrets kept indoors the season is starting earlier and earlier.
Hobs tend to come into season earlier than females Feb/March and jills start coming into season in early spring. If a jill is mated she will usually carry her kits for 42 days. Ferret kits are usually born in June and July although there are always earlier and later litters. Ferret kits should be kept with their mother for a minimum of 6 weeks, although 8 - 10 weeks is much better as young ferrets learn social skills and manners from their mother in this time.
In the summer months ferret kits are readily available. Rescues are usually over run during this time with kits from unwanted litters as well as older ferrets who have been overlooked in favour of cute youngsters. Older ferrets are usually available all year round from rescues and the SSPCA. Glasgow cat & dog home and other small animal sanctuaries often have ferrets looking for a good home.
Ferrets become increasingly scarce as the rabbit hunting season begins. September - April. Sadly the rescues often fill up after the season with unwanted animals or perceived bad workers. These animals are usually too young to be focused enough for hunting or if just useless at chasing bunnies they make perfectly good pets.
